Buying a Safe? What You Need to Know

🔍 Safe Selection Guide

Not all safes are created equal. Here's what to consider when buying a safe:

1️⃣ What Are You Protecting?

  • Documents/Cash: Fire-resistant safe (1-2 hour rating)
  • Jewelry/Coins: Burglary-resistant safe (TL-15 or better)
  • Guns: Gun safe with fire rating (10-30 gun capacity)
  • Data/Media: Media-rated safe (lower temp protection)

2️⃣ Where Will It Go?

  • Bedroom closet: Standard upright safe
  • Under floor: Floor safe (in-ground concrete)
  • Inside wall: Wall safe (between studs)
  • Garage/basement: Heavy-duty gun safe

3️⃣ Security Level Needed?

  • Basic: Residential Security Container (RSC)
  • Good: B-Rate safe (1/4" steel)
  • Better: TL-15 (resists tools 15 min)
  • Best: TL-30 or TL-30X6 (commercial grade)

4️⃣ Fire Protection?

  • 30 minutes: Basic residential
  • 1 hour: Good protection
  • 2+ hours: Commercial/high value
  • Note: Fire rating ≠ burglary rating!

💡 Free Consultation

Not sure which safe is right for you? We offer free consultations to help you choose the perfect safe for your needs and budget. We'll explain the differences and help you make an informed decision.

Safe Installation Best Practices

✅ DO:

  • Bolt it down - Anchoring prevents thieves from carrying the safe away
  • Hide it - Place in a closet or basement, not openly visible
  • Use concrete anchors - Minimum 1/2" diameter bolts into concrete
  • Level it properly - Ensures door alignment and smooth operation
  • Change the combination - Factory combos may be known

❌ DON'T:

  • Leave it unanchored - Even 500lb safes can be stolen
  • Put it in plain sight - Don't advertise what you're protecting
  • Write combo on safe - Keep it in a separate secure location
  • Buy based on weight alone - Thick fire insulation ≠ theft protection
  • Cheap out - A $200 safe won't protect $20,000 in valuables

Safe Service Questions

Can you open my safe without destroying it?

In most cases, yes! We use non-destructive entry methods for 90%+ of safe openings. We only resort to drilling or destructive entry as a last resort. If we do need to drill, we drill in a way that allows the safe to be repaired and remain functional.

How long does it take to open a locked safe?

Simple safes (SentrySafe, First Alert) typically take 30-60 minutes. Higher-security safes (gun safes, commercial safes) may take 1-3 hours. Complex vault systems can take longer. We'll give you a time estimate once we assess your specific safe.

What size gun safe do I need?

Buy bigger than you think! If you have 10 rifles, get a 20-gun safe minimum. With scopes and accessories, you fit far fewer guns than the rated capacity. Common sizes: 12-gun (8 rifles realistically), 24-gun (15-18 rifles), 40-gun (25-30 rifles). We help you size appropriately.

Do you sell safes or just service them?

We both sell AND service safes! We carry major brands and can order any safe you need. We include delivery and professional installation in our prices. Buying from us means you get expert guidance, proper installation, and local service if you ever need it.

How often should I change my safe combination?

Home safes: Every 2-3 years, or immediately if someone unauthorized might know it. Business safes: Whenever an employee with access leaves the company. Also change combinations on used safes - you never know who has the previous combination.

What if the safe was damaged in a fire?

Fire-damaged safes often weld shut from heat expansion. We can open them, but contents may be damaged depending on the fire rating and fire severity. Document safes protect paper to 350°F. Media safes protect electronic media to 125°F. Gun safes vary widely in fire protection quality.
